Drive-thru COVID-19 testing

Wake County is now conducting drive-thru COVID-19 testing at specified locations throughout the county. This free service provides an easy and efficient way for residents to learn if they have the virus.

We don’t have the resources to test all 1.1 million residents in Wake County. That’s why we’re targeting specific groups for drive-thru testing, because they are most at risk. Children under the age of 18, if they fall into one of the categories outlined below, may be tested if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you fall into one of the following categories, you are a good candidate for our free drive-thru testing:

  • Have COVID-like symptoms – fever, cough, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, loss of smell;
  • Have been in close contact with a known positive case of COVID-19;
  • Are a healthcare worker or first responder;
  • Work in high-risk settings like long-term care facilities, correctional facilities and homeless shelters;
  • Are 65 years old or older;
  • Have underlying health conditions;
  • Are a member of a vulnerable or historically marginalized population;
  • Are a frontline worker in a setting where social distancing is difficult; or
  • Have attended protests, rallies or other mass gatherings.

If you are in one of the groups we’re targeting for drive-thru testing, there are a few steps you must take before you come to our testing site.

Step 1: Choose a location from the top of this page and use the "Sign Up" button to select a time slot for testing. You can select the half-hour window that works best for you.

Step 2: Fill out this form to register for testing. It includes basic identification information that we need to provide you with your results.

Step 3: Print the form and bring it with you to your testing appointment.

You only need to bring two things with you to your appointment – your printed registration form and an ID. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include your driver license, voter registration card, passport and utility bill. There is no cost to take the test.

  • You will drive up to the check-in tent at your designated time, and show your ID and registration form.
  • Then, you will drive to the testing tent and remain in your car with your window up.
  • A Wake County staff member will hand you a self-administered COVID-19 test, and you’ll use it to swab the inside of your nostrils. You’ll place the swab in a test tube, place the test tube in a bag and hand the bag back to the Wake County staff member.
  • There should be virtually no contact between the test taker and the test administrator.

LabCorp typically processes the tests in 24–48 hours.
Those who test positive for COVID-19 will receive a phone call notification. Those who test negative will not be notified, but instructions to view results are below. If you have COVID-19 symptoms – or came into close-contact with someone who has tested positive – you should return home after the test and self-isolate until you receive your results.

After your test, instructions will be provided to create an account with LabCorp. You can use the LabCorp portal to view your results, regardless of whether they came back positive or negative. If you have questions or you don’t see the results in the LabCorp portal after 48 hours, please call 919-856-7404.

You should remain in self isolation and follow the instructions provided when you are notified of your positive result.
